Waste Value Chain Tour

Lagos State, the second largest metropolitan city in Africa boasts of a population of over 20 million people. With the UN estimated 0.7kg of solid waste produced per human daily, 14 million kg (14,000 tonnes) of waste (biodegradable and non-biodegradable) is churned out daily on average in Lagos State. Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) reports a capacity to collect 8,000 tonnes (8 million kg) daily cumulatively at 4 of its major dumpsites.

Springing from the Circular Lagos Project, the LOOPLab Incubation program identified Circular Economy Innovators who work collaboratively on the Waste Value Chain, widening the chain and promoting collaborative work – covering biodegradable (organic, agricultural and paper waste) and non-biodegradable (simple polymer plastics, complex polymer plastics, low value plastics and aluminum), all converted into useful outputs in fields of Construction; Renewable Energy; FMCG; Fashion; Animal Husbandry and Entertainment; with the support of mobile technology to induce social participation.
